Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy SD 16:9 issues

    Hello,

We used the Panasonic AG-DVC30 to shoot 16:9 footage. The camera is 4:3 SD but has the option of recording 16:9 too. It can do this two different ways: by letterboxing the image (adding black bars at the top and bottom) or by stretching the image vertically. We used the second method and I understand that it is better because you’re usgin the whole chip instead of masking part of the image out.

When we work with this footage in FCP 5.1 we have some issues.
If we set our project using the preset DV-NTSC Anamorphic everything looks good until we export. When we export using QuickTime Movie>Current Settings the movie we get is slightly squeezed from the sides (something in between 16:9 and 4:3).
I also tried another approach by modifying my Sequence Presets to Frame Size (853×480), Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square and I uncheck Anamorphic 16:9. When we export we get a true 16:9 without any kind of deformation but the problem is that our timeline needs rendering all the time, even for playback.

Is there a set up that will get rid of those issues?

Thanks a lot for your help!

We need to know where this is going. To DVD, DV tape, or the web? And after that, will it play as true 16:9 or is it going to be letterboxed within a 4:3 frame?

There are simple answers, but they differ slightly for each of those scenarios.
