How do you scrub audio in Vegas pro9?

I have an interview with two girls in the frame, however only one girl has a mic. You can still hear the 2 girl clearly, but of course the girl with the mic is louder then the second girl. What can I do to even out the audio?

    Nasty . . . .

OK, I have NOT done exactly this, but have used the elements of remedy I describe below. Two problems immediately spring to mind, and, as a result, a third too:

1] Talking overlap: If the 2 girls, A and B, do NOT overlap then you are, sorry for pun, halfway there. If there is enough “separation” between the two then literally split out A from B and place A or B on a new clean track. You can now start adjusting-back the Volume of the louder. If you DO have a lot of chatty overlap then this is gonna be a nightmare . . .

    . . moving on . .

2] Audio Characteristics: Apart from volume, speakers/people, generally, “off-mic” will not have the same audio characteristic as those “on-mic”. “Off-mic” sound distant, echoey and of course quieter (see above). This was my third observation, “On-mic” sound as if they are standing next to you. In which case you going to need to try and apply some SFx that will bring A towards B in their characteristics. You could try adding some small amount of one of the “Acoustic Mirror” characteristics?

As I say, I have NOT done exactly this for the purpose above, but have used all the elements above to achieve a remedial result. Maybe others here have a better and more straightforward way.

Another way, now thinking about this a bit further, would be to do an initial Normalization by leaving the Splits on the same track and THEN do the Acoustic Mirror approach? Might be an idea . . .

Anyway, how “bad” is it? Somtimes it could look<>sound ok. After all it did happen this way?

    Grazie

    I’ll try it out…

Originally this was supposed to be individual interviews, therefore I only brought one lav mic. Then out of the blue the producer had the brilliant idea to but both girls together and I didn’t have a mic and of course he thinks it’s so easy to “oh just scrub the audio, it;s not rocket science” ya well he;s not the one editing…

anyways if there are any other idea please add more… i’ll try what Graham suggested.
