  • scrolling text problem in final cut

Ok, I have a huge project that I am trying to output to DVD. I have gotten to the point where I am at the credits. I made them in photoshop and animated them to scroll in after effects then rendered the quicktime and imported it into final cut 5.1.4. After testing everything I can think of I still get the same result when viewing the DVD, the text (and only the text) flickers slightly when it scrolls. This happens regardless of what sequence setting I use, I have tried animation, uncompressed 10-bit, none, dv. I have also tried every type of field dominice as well as using Compressor (one pass CBR 6 and 7) as well as DVD Studio Pro. Can anyone help me?

Try various flicker filters in both FCP and After effects…maybe need to soften them a slight amount.

Are you just getting the flickering on the horizontal edges of the text? The advice to soften is good. I find that doing a gaussian or vertical direction blur of a couple of pixels solves the problem — and is almost undetectable to the eye as the text scrolls by.

You need to make sure the scrolling speed you used in After Effects is right for the amount of text you have. You can go to Aenhancers.co – it seems like I can’t post URL’s here, but in the expression library section you will find a piece of code that will help you

I tried all of those things and they didnt seem to help. I didnt really solve the problem, but I took the psd file into final cut and animated the sequence instead of animating it in after effects. after applying the flicker filter to that it helped somewhat. the text is jagged vertically and horizontally without the filter. I would really like to know why it does this.

I am also have issues with interlacing, the piece is a documentary with countless footage from many sources, the interviews were shot in HDV and most of the b-roll is from VHS and BETA SP. I am unsure of what my sequence settings should be, should I turn the field dominance off and let compressor take care of the interlacing? If it is set to lower in a nested sequence will have it set to none in the ‘parent’ sequence make a difference?
