scripting in FC
Posted by Victoria Murphy on December 2, 2006 at 3:04 amIs there anyway to write a script in FC for a task that I am doing many times? I am working in 4.5 but could upgrade to 5 if that would enable me to do this. Thanks.

December 2, 2006 at 3:07 amThere’s really not a scripting feature in any version of FCP.
Post what your repetitive task is, maybe we can come up with a more streamlined way of getting your job done workflow wise or something…

December 2, 2006 at 3:18 amFCP 5.1.2 does now offer some verty limited scripting hooks into FCP, but these are primarily targeted at automating workflows using XML … if thats a method by which you could get the job done more efficiently then you might want to look into the upgrade. other than that you’re limited to UI Scripting, which, whilst doable, is far from the most straightforward scripting method.

December 7, 2006 at 3:33 amHi Jerry, (I had to take a few days off from this project, hence my late response.) The 3 steps are:
File/Export Using Quicktime Conversion/Still Image (from the format menu).
I have to do this many times to export clips to help me visualize my project and eventually build a storyboard. A while back I posted re efficient ways to export a lot of stills for this purpose. I didn’t come up with anything more direct than this.
Thanks. Victoria

December 7, 2006 at 3:38 amThanks Andy. I took a somewhat cursory look at the link you provided to GUI scripting. Right now I am not going to put the time in to learn about it so I don’t know if it would help out for my task or not. I appreciate the suggestion.

December 7, 2006 at 4:43 amHi Victoria
for exporting a large number of your clips as stills, you might find selecting those clips in the browser window, and using File menu >Batch Export to be the best way forward.
in the Export Queue window, press the Settings… button at bottom center to destination for the saved files, the format (Still Image) and the settings for that format
click OK and then press the Export button (at bottom right of the Export Queue window)the stills will be exported as per the settings, using the media start, or In Point if marked, as the exported frame
hope that helps
Andy
