Is there any way in FCP to batch rename clips etc. ?

I used to help manage a render farm for a VFX company and we had a load of shake scripts for renaming, so if you wanted to change:

    Whatever_Here_001_v3.dpx

    to

    whatever_here_001_v3.dpx

you’d input filename in, filename out with a $$$ over the sequence numbers.

What I’d really like to be able to do is change:

    Some Random Mess Cam 003 – 010110
    and
    Some Other Random Mess 3 – 010110

    to

    My Actual Name Cam 003 – 010110

so I need some sort of find / replace. I can’t see any way of getting scripting into FCP. Can I export XML and play with it in filemaker without breaking it?

Are you meaning clips inside of FCP? or the files that FCP is managing.
If it’s the files outside of FCP, I love name mangler.

If it’s the files inside – I’d have to think about that. Yes, there might be an XML way.

I suppose what I’m really after is a better way of managing clip names in FCP. Is it possible to trawl through the XML and do Find + Replace without breaking it? That way I could then use Rename>File as Clip Name

    Dicey.

The issue is that you’d want to change the internal name in FCP and leave the source alone. Tough; I’d test it with the XML and a decent text grep search/replace. Easier to do it at the finder level and reimport from scratch.
