screwey capture…
Posted by Joseph Farris on August 23, 2005 at 2:45 amhas anyone else had this problem… I’m trying to capture 720p material over hdsdi inputs on my kona card. Unfortunately I’m using my camera so it’s a non controllable device. I have captured plenty of things just fine this way but tonight the audio is way out of sync, so far I couldn’t even tell you how many seconds, when I escape capture now the clip is missing 10 or more seconds at the end of the clip. also I’m getting what appears to be drop frames ( little black flashes every now and then). nothing has changed I’m completely at a loss. Anyone have any ideas what may be causing this? Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

August 23, 2005 at 3:39 amthis has all of the classic signs of a drive speed issue, especially the black flashes. What speed drive are you capturing to? How full are they?

August 23, 2005 at 3:55 amThanks for the response David. I’m capturing to a Lacie 500GB firewire 800 drive. I have plenty of other footage captured the same way to this drive with no problems. I still have 315GB available.

August 23, 2005 at 12:31 pmthere have been issues with HD-SDI captures and Final Cut Pro 5.0. Supposedly FCP 5.0.2 fixed this, but I’ve seen on the FCP forum that folks are still having some issues.
Essentially FCP captures the clip correctly, but the clip in the Browser is either incorrect or displays no video at all. The solution is to simply delete the clips from your Browser (just simply highlight them and delete the clip icons, do NOT use “make media offline”). Now go out to your hard-drive and drag the clips into your browser. These clips should play fine.
You’re coming in HD-SDI but then capturing to the DVCPro HD codec, right? Uncompressed 720p would not work correctly with FW800. Also, this will actually add another layer of compression to DVCPro HD material so your captures will be not be as clean than if you captured directly from Firewire.

hey Joe –First CML and Now here.
I am going to assume you have a K2 card, running FCP5 and the latest AJA and Apple updates.
First issue – Clip ending early
when you capture now in HDSDI from the camera – FCP cannot handle all of the info dynamically, so it cache’s the incoming info, unfortunately for you you need to compensate for the system caching these files on ingest by allocating time for the processor and system to catch up – and this depends on the speed of your computer and amount of RAMgood rule of thumb for this process is let the camera roll for at least 30 seconds after a capture before “escaping”
if the capture is more than 30 minutes allow 1 minute extra for every 30 minutes of capture.
Issue 2
check your cables and make sure you have updated the AJA drivers.gary adcock

August 23, 2005 at 2:00 pmThanks for all the input guys. I’ll give it a try this evening and see what happens. I know that I’m adding another step of compression, just something I have to deal with for the time being. I’m not an edit house so right now it’s hard to justify a deck rental/ purchase just to play around with some stuff. Still much better than the transfers to dvcam/ firewire edit that I was doing…. This problem just seems a little odd to me, I have 150gb of footage that was captured this way with no problems. I am running the latest fcp5 and knona 2 drivers. anyways I will give all your suggestions a try and post the results. Thanks again.
Gary- I still haven’t finished reading all the responses to the cml question, seems like I opened up a big can of worms 🙂

August 23, 2005 at 9:24 pmI did not know that there were “issues” with this. I have a problem captureing 720p to KONA2 in that useing ‘clip’ capture with time code, when the clip lands in the bin, FCP has made a sub-clip out of it. The edges of the icon are jagged, and only audio plays (there is no master clip to reference of course). If i delete the clip and import it, it comes in as a real clip and plays fine. I’ve seen this happen on a BM card also. I’ts curous, but on this system, capture ‘now’ seems to work fine, only ‘batch’ or ‘clip’ capture show this problem.
Thanks for the info. -
