I am an American author living in New Zealand. I am currently working with the trial version of Vegas Platinum 10 to ascertain my ability to produce a book trailer for my forthcoming novel. (https://www.gordonryan.com) I have created several trailers with Windows Movie Maker, but Vegas seems a step up in professionalism. Initial question: Should I set the screen resolution to the 4:3 or the widescreen 16:9. I intend to upload to YouTube, then embed the trailer in my website and blog. Thanks for your response.

That depends on your video format. Did you record your video at SD or HD? SD-widescreen or HD-widescreen?

Since your want to promote your book using a trailer on YouTube, its best that you go for HD-widescreen for better quality.

Tommy, thank you for your response. I did not give sufficient information for you to reply apparently. I did not create any video, or use a Camcorder. I am making a book trailer, composed of still pictures, a brief film clip, and text additions. So, what I am really seeking is the correct format to initiate the creation of the Vegas video. For instance, the options are multiple, at least four that start with Internet, also 4:3 and 16:9. Then the wide screen or standard. I will create this video and upload it to You Tube, but it is the origination on Vegas that confuses me at present. I have found many tutorial videos on YouTube, (the kids producing them are quite versatile and knowledgeable) but so far, nothing that says what my initial settings should be. Your response, HD Wide Screen, does not address the 10 or 12 options that are listed in the Vegas drop down menu. Can you perhaps elaborate, or tell me exactly what information to provide for you. Thanks again.

For YouTube, I suggest you take advantage of the widescreen format and High Definition format. It will look very professional to your viewers.

For starters, go to the Project Properties (ALT+ENTER)

Template: HDV 720-30p (1280×720, 29.970 fps) – this is High Definition Widescreen. All the selections below that are also HD WS.

This is what I usually use for YouTube videos.

For rendering settings I use WMV or MainConcept AVC/AAC MP4, but I use WMV to match the exact colors for my original project.

Here are my settings for WMV:

Audio: 96 Kbps (or higher), 44,100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo, WMA 9.2 CBR
Video: 29.970 fps, 1280×720 Progressive, Bitrate 6.3 Mbps (Internet/LAN, type “6 M”), Smoothness 100, Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.000, Framerate 29.970 fps NTSC, Seconds per keyframe 5, Override default compression buffer 3
Project: Video Rendering Quality – Best

    Hope this helps!
