Screaming Video Card?
Howdy,
I know that people have reported similar issues with their video cards, but I didn’t see any solutions posted in the archives. I’ve got a NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT DDL video card, and when I overtax it it starts to scream at me. Like a whistling tea-kettle scream that makes the studio pretty unbearable. I’ve read some online reports that this is a fan noise, but it sounds more like an alarm to me. This happens when I’m rendering, sometimes, and when I’m just playing back a timeline, sometimes. For the renders it’s no big deal, I just cancel and restart the render, and that seems to help. But for playback, like when I’m laying off an hour-long show, it’s just maddening.
Has anybody else experienced this high-pitched scream? Is it just this card? (I think it’s still under warranty, if it’s an issue with this one card.) I’ve got the case open and the plastic shielding off, and it’s still a problem.
Any help or suggestions would be welcome. Thanks a lot.

Nope, never heard that. I just had a similar issue with my old G4 Dual 1.25 whereby something in that fan / blower assembly had gone south and they had to replace the entire assembly. After about 10 minutes of use it would sound like Tone coming out of the box. After they fixed it, it was back to being quiet.
I’m thinking your fan has gone bad on the card.
