I am new to After Effects, I just got CS5, I added the Scratchy Film Preset/Filter to a video layer and it doesn’t seem to do anything…
I added it to a null layer above all my footage, nothing. I added my composition to another composition and added the filter and nothing…
I tried changing the settings and all that but still, nothing happens! Why? Any other vintage film effect that will work? Am I doing something wrong? -

Applying an effect to a null above your footage will do exactly that…nothing. You have to apply effects to layers or adjustment layers.
