I am building a new machine and planned on using a 10,000 rpm HDD as an OS/Programs drive. I have a couple 250 GB as what I would call data drives. I am not 100% clear on what Premiere does on the scratch disk, and what is the best way to set up a system (7200 rpm or 10,000 rpm as the scratch disk)

I will be capturing and saving to the large drives, both operate at 7200 rpm. Is it best to use a faster drive for the capture and export? I still may be able to budget some money for HDDs for this system.

    Thanks in advance

Another thought, should I scrap the 10,000 rpm Raptor for a raid configuration? I here that you can get superior tranfer rates with Raid.

It depends on your work situation. In my case, I have two 7200 rpm 160 gig hard drives for my data. I usually have several small projects going at the same time, with the materials provided by the client. If one of my hard drives dies (and they all will eventually), I only lose the work on that drive. In a RAID system, if one hard drive dies, you lose everything, since the data is spread over multiple drives. For me, a RAID system is too risky.

I believe there is a raid configuration that covers you in case a HDD dies, somehow it backs up all the data all the time across your drives. Maybe I’m wrong, anyone care to comment.

J D Mack is right in a Raid 0 configuration but it is really a false argument because if you bought a 160Gb drive instead of 2 x 80Gb drives your risk is the same. The advantage of Raid 0 over a single drive is speed and throughput. A good Raid is essential for HDV.
Other Raid configurations can be set up, the simplest is Raid +1, two drives, on for backup. If you lose one, then simply replace it.
