I wouldn’t be surpriced if FCP does this in the next version. Perhaps not SD/HD in the same timeline since that is really hardware demading (heck, avid wants something like 10 000 dollors for their xDNX HD-hardware). But I reckon this shouldn’t be a problem for FCP to handle “soon”.

Input anything, output almost anything (HDV might be hard). Shouldn’t be THAT big of an issue.

    Lets se what NAB

[Blub] “Mixing formates would be great I would also like a feature where at any stage you can drag any format to the timeline and you get a box”

That’s what I was saying about it’s a shame CineWave died when it did. We were mixing formats almost two years ago in FCP. All the SD formats could be mixed in one timeline, in real-time including Lossless + Alpha.

Again, CineWave did this almost two years ago in SD. Mixed all SD codecs together including Lossless + Alpha. Nobody else has stepped up to the plate to deliver it.

Very true and sad that they put the card to sleep.

However, a software cpu/gpu approach is the future compared to propriatary hardware. There you should be able to get ALOT of realtime on todays high-end machines. Apple just has the get the FCP Engine up to speed.

As a guy on the IBC-floor said “FCP still runs on old DNA, what and see what will happen in the near future

I’m curious to see what happens with mixed resolutions when Apple replaces the PowerPC chip with Intel processor(s). I’m also curious to see how well the new dual and quad core PowerPC processors will sell, especially when you consider that development for PowerPC OS X applications will most likely grind to a halt after Intel is implemented. As much as I’d like the boost in speed over my Dual 2.0, I can see future upgrades to ProApps migrating to Intel only versions. Alas, such is the nature of the beast. Today’s cool box is tomorrows piece of s—.

I think it will take QUITE SOME TIME for apps to “halt PPC-support”. Concidering software has to sell to live, and even a year after the intel-swich has started 95% av all customers will still run PPC hardware. No, the transition will take quite some time – a few years I’d predict.

I have to put my 2 cents in here, fyi. The real shame is that Pinnacle (now Avid) Liquid Edition did this last year with HDV and SD (not sure about HD), 4:3 and/ 16:9, in both NTSC and PAL on the same timeline. That’s a $700 software NLE, and without very steep system requirements.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not plugging LE, just stating a fact.

    Thanks,
    Gary

That’s something I really curious about. In June they announce Intel based machines for 2006, then in November they release a new Dual Core machine. So how many people are jumping on that machine or waiting to see the Intel machines? Right now I’m one of the latter, though I may pick up a Quad just for After Effects work since it doesn’t need any extra hardware to run.

Sales of PPC apps will fall off a precipice with the introduction of the Intel boxes. With lack of sufficient income, there will be no incentive to continue support. Perhaps Apple will continue to support their own apps for the short run to muffle the squeals, but anyone with the slightest bit of foresight can see the end of life for PPC apps looming. Another dose of “tough love” for macophiles. Prepare to “re-up” again. On the bright side, you are still better off than Avid owners in this respect.

Where do you think all this real-time is coming from for the Adrenaline? AVID is bringing some fantastic Pinnacle technology to the party. Also remember than Andrew Baum, who was the head of CineWave and Liquid at Pinnacle, was also the original Product Manager for FCP and in fact introduced Final Cut Pro for Apple. So it’s no surprise that AVID now supports the DVCPro HD codec natively.

Pinnacle will bring a lot to the AVID product line, especially Adrenaline users.
