Hi folks (Enzo, this might be one for you),

I’m trying to do the effect seen in Schindler’s List, where one character’s clothing was in colour while the rest of the scene was B/W.

I use Final Cut Express HD, and posted this question on the Apple forum. I got a reply with a very complex way to do it using the Limit Effects filter in Color Corrector, but this didn’t do the trick. I’m hoping there’s a plug-in that can make short work of it, but am happy to go the long way if it works.

Enzo, your Nattress lead (for G lines) was great, so I thought you might know a similarly good product.

    Thanks in advance,
    Andrew

There is no quick and dirty on this one. This is the way to go.

If the original clip is black and white then you ahve no choice but to rotoscope (draw the color on to each frame) the effect.

David’s right, Andrew. There isn’t really a drag and drop filter than can accomplish this sort of thing in a click. Way too many variables – the tute David has suggested is how you’d tackle it in Final Cut.

I find this sort of thing often goes better in AE if you want to paint directly on the clip… it has a true paint engine.. just change blend mode of strokes to color

    Thanks Richard,

I don’t have After Effects, but will look into it.
