  • Scaling Type on a path

I need to create type on a path, skew option, that gets smaller from left to right.
If I add an envelope distort to distort the type so that the gets small from left to right, it warps the curve of the path, which then is lost. Is there a way to scale the type smoothly from left to right while keeping the path active?

Use Envelope Distort > Make with Mesh. Create two paths as a guide, then just distort the path using this mesh by manipulating the control points of the mesh so they will snap to the guide paths. This way the text will be shrinking gradually (depending on how good job you do with aligning the anchors) and at the same time, the text remains live and editable. See attached image. At the very bottom, I’ve simply retyped the distorted text, since it remained editable.

You can also download the enclosed AI CS4 file.

PS: You actually have to turn the paths into guides (View > Guides > Make Guides) in order for the anchors of the mesh to snap to them.
