    hi-

i am working on a job for an artist who wants to take 16 streams of video and scale them down to display on one screen. the image is graphic – lots of lines – the 16 images form one large drawing. i have set everything up for her but she is unhappy with the loss of detail when the images get so small (each stream is displayed at a scale of 24).

i don’t think that there is anything to be done – as i feel it is just a result of the nature of what she is trying to do. but i was wondering if perhaps someone has any idea of how i can enhance the image to maintain detail at the small size. ultimately, the whole thing will be projected large – 9-12′.

we had the idea of convering the material to HD (it was shot on mini-DV originally) – but i don’t think the blow up will do any good.

    thanks!

DV will not look good blown up to HD resolution. The only work-around is to redraw the lines thicker. So, the lines are 1 pixel thick now, they will need to be 3 or 4 pixels thick for this project. This may not be possible for the given content however.

You might want to use After Effects or combustion for the scaling. Not sure what version of FCP you are on but the scaling in general is pretty lossy. I’ve heard that version 5 is much better, but perhaps still not as good as using AE. Good luck!
