    Hi,
I do not have FCP myself but do color correction and compositing work in AE. My client has a project, partially shot in HDV, on a DV timeline in FCP. For some reason the scaling algorithm makes the material look blocky when scaled down.
Is there a checkbox somewhere to make this better?

The problem is the DV codec. In FCP go to Sequence>>Settings, then change the compressor to ProRes or even DVCPro, then re-render the sequence. That renders in a codec in 4:2:2 color space, greatly reducing interpolation.

Switched to DVCPro, it looks the same, now trying ProRess. Can I determine which algorithm is used for scaling?

[David Roth Weiss] “change the compressor to ProRes or even DVCPro”

DVCPro is the same codec as DV. DVCPro 50 is 4:2:2 color space & much less compressed.

Set “Render in High Precission” and “Render Motion Effects: BEST” (Sequence Setting).
Both things should help with the downscaling.
Unless you intend to print to DV tape, set the sequence codec to Prores.

Of course I meant DVCPro 50… Blame it on typing on an iPhone.

[Dave LaRonde] “Why not do the scaling in AE?”

The scaling engine is better, but it’s the DV codec that’s doing the most damage. rendering and exporting as DV to a better scaling engine is like trying to polish a dog log, if you get my drift.

    Dave,
Scaling has gotten much better in FCP 7. Have you tried it lately? Must have Motion settings to Best, though.
