    Howdy

I have a clip of a guy cutting a log with a chainsaw. Some of the sawdust/debri hits the lens. My client would like more stuff to cover the screen then their logo appears thru the sawdust.

I have used a sawdust texture matted with blurred paint splashes and duplicated many times that appear and cover the screen but kinda looks … well … dumb.

I have particular but only have a basic knowledge thus far. I’m having trouble getting it to ‘spit out’ at pace to hit the screen and also trying to get the particles to look like sawdust.

I know in particle playground you can link the emitter to a file but again trying to get the right velocity etc.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Hello LanceB

i think Autodesk Combustion,or particle Illusion Are the best software’s with lots of particle as preset.

    best of luck

CC Particle World has a floor that can be rotated to be your screen. The floor can be set to be sticky so particles stay put. The emitter parameters are similar to any other particle system and, because it is a 3D system, you should be able to give the illusion that the emitter is at the plane of the saw. Motion tracking will easily nail the emitter to the saw’s movements.

Changing the sawdust to the logo is a bit more complicated, can’t help you there directly but the “text into sand” tutorials here on the cow might give you some inspiration.

i don’t have particular at home, but i’m pretty sure you can define a layer as a ‘bounce’ plane, set the bounce property to ‘stick’ and set it to use the alpha of that layer… this way the particles would stick only to the alpha of the logo layer. you’ll need make the logo layer 3d and position it wher you need it. and you may still need the logo to dissolve in full to complete the transition.

as far as creating saw dust like particles… in particular you can’t create freely tumbling particles like you can in cc particle world, but you can create a tumbling particle in another comp and use that as a custom particle in particular.

create a small comp (like 10×10) create a new layer that is a little smaller, maybe 8×8. make it a sawdust color and try adding roughen edges to make it more sawdust like. then make it 3d and add an expression like this to the orientation property: wiggle(10,180). that should make it tumble around a bit. bring that comp into your particular comp and set it as your particle.

you can set the emitter to directional and place it where it needs to be to seem like it is coming from the chain saw and shooting towards the camera and the logo… it’s a little tricky for a first particle system, but i think you can do it and you’ll learn a lot about particular. and you might post in the trapcode forum for more help/tips on using particular to complete this effect.

Given that sawdust is very fine, you wouldn’t really see it until it hit the “camera” and starts to clump up, no? Couldn’t you just make little bits appear in frame rather than use flying particles?

Say, by using the never-used Dissolve mode (whee!) for the logo or maybe a gradient wipe with Fractal Noise + Noise (precomped) as the gradient to bring on the logo?

    Something like that.

Thanks everyone for your help. I’m on to it.

    …this will be fun.
