Saw the new HPX2100 today
Posted by Peter Corbett on December 6, 2006 at 10:23 amI had a real run through with an actual production version available-for-sale unit of the HPX2100 today at Digital Media World. Very nice camera, excellent buils quality; almost looks identical to a SDX900 except for the LCD screen on the side. The H.264 board is not available until July though. I’ll be posting a video of it and the Infinity on Youtube tomorrow.
Also had a go with the latest version of Infinity. Different story there. Don’t hold your breath for an immediate purchase… Intriguing camera though.

December 6, 2006 at 6:00 pmare the chips different than what’s in the HDX900? Is the only difference the Tape/P2?
Also what’s the latest on the HVX200 being upgraded to be able to record the H.264 format? Going to buy one at the beginning of 07. Will it also be upgradeable with firmware or a new board?
Thanks

December 6, 2006 at 10:09 pmNot sure if it the same chip as the HVX900. It’s a 1-mill CCD-size for the 2100. It looks like a SPX900 except they have moved the transport controls to the upper left side. There will not be a firmware/board upgrade to H264 for the HVX200 as far as I know. Even the new HVX500 will not have H.264.

December 7, 2006 at 2:42 amWere you impressed? Cameras are developing so quickly that (more than ever) buying one raises fears of instant obsolescence. I’m looking for the right camera, right time to buy.
Is the HPx2100 a camera that will hold up against the competition for a couple of years?

December 7, 2006 at 5:08 amwhat in the heck is a hvx500?
Sorry I haven’t heard of it yet.
Where can I read about it?

December 7, 2006 at 2:25 pmBob, the build quality was excellent as you would expect from Panasonic broadcast cameras. It’s hard to tell about PQ at a trade show, but I assume it’s a least equivalent to the HVX900.
The HPX500 is due in July and features four P2 slots instead of five, slightly less robust body, 600K CCD’s (but will do HD in a way) no H.264 option, but does do variable frame rate, unlike the 2100. It’s under US$20K.

December 8, 2006 at 5:47 amThe HPX500 is a new 2/3″, interchangeable-lens, HD-SDI/Genlock/TCIN & TC-OUT camera that has all the features of the HVX200, so you get variable frame rates, 1080 & 720 & DV50 & DV, etc. Should be shown in April at NAB, with a price of “under 200,000 Yen” (okay, so all I’ve seen on it is the Japanese press release, and that’s what they called it). So figure around $15,000 or so.

December 8, 2006 at 6:35 amDoes shown at NAB mean available on waitlist Q1-08?
The Hpx500 doesnt have a tape trasport does it?
You know I’m going to save the money and get a HVX200 over the HDX900 which I got pretty excited about. But I have to say the HPX900 is pretty interesting since it has firewire and tape. That means you’re tape based archive and your direct-to-(transfer then)-edit firestore is captured at the same time!
That’s an even faster workflow than P2 which you have to back up twice so that you have an archive and working copy.
Regardless…
The HVX500 and the HPX2100 were definitely the cameras I felt Panasonic should have been making. Now if we can only get a high gig P2 cards!

December 8, 2006 at 6:39 amI was told the HVX500 would be shipping in July here in Asutralia. Keep it mind it’s trying to do 1080i and 720P with 600K chips. There is definitely no tape transport.

December 8, 2006 at 6:43 amSo does that mean that the HDX900 or the HPX2100 is the better camera based off chips alone?

Peter Corbett
December 8, 2006 at 6:49 amThe 2100 definitely. It has the one megapixel 3-CCD versus 600K for the 500, plus I’m not sure about cinegamma and other stuff that it may have. It will be a better camera, but how much better to the viewer sitting back in a chair watching compressed off-air HD or a DVD, remains to be seen.
