  • Saving titles with transitions as a template

Posted by Marcin Staszewski on May 23, 2011 at 11:08 pm

    Hello,

I have a project with lots of lower 3rd’s and titles. I created some templates but i still have to apply fade in and fade out manually to every title… Also I noticed that even the shortcut for default video transition doesn’t work with titles, so it’s drag and drop method for me – real pain!

It would have been so much easier if there was a way to preset the transitions ‘inside’ a template. Any ideas?

I do quite a bit of TV shows and having templates transitions and lower thirds is an absolute must! Working with both FCP & PPRO the workflow for both is the same. Make a template project that has a sequence dedicated to transitions, lower 3rds and gfx. Start with that project and save as or import the project to existing projects to keep all the template builds. 😉

When making a template project I have to prepare like 10 lower thirds (assuming there isn’t gonna be more than 10 different persons) etc. – is that what you mean? That way I would have to do it just once, as you say… Of course it’s a good idea, and I’m going to stick with it from now on.
But still, while preparing the template project I have to apply every transition to the titles manually, right?

In FCP my workflow was just to copy the text (with transitions) on to another lower third, and just change the name (or whatever). In premiere when I copy a title, it’s still connected to the original, so when I change it, the first one chages as well. With this workflow I was hoping that if I couldn’t just copy the titles (with transitions), I would at least be able to save them as templates. Is there any solution to that?

Thanks for the tip with template project 🙂

place one title on the timeline with the transition you need.

Copy and paste that wherever you need a lower third.

Prepare all versions of the lower third in the Title tool.

(in the Project panel, if you select a title and hit Cntrl Shit / it will duplicate it)

then you can use ALT Drag from the project panel to replace the title on the timeline with the correct titles, and this will leave the transitions in tact but replace the title.

That should say “Shift” ….. I wasn’t intentionally cursing. 🙂

For me the ‘duplicate’ shortcut was alt+D, maybe because I set FCP7 keyboard in preferences. But other than that, this method is exactly what I was looking for – thanks a lot! 🙂
