saving titles
Posted by Thomas Whaley on September 29, 2011 at 2:48 amHow can I save a simple title? Say I create a simple tile in the storyline and would like to use it later in the storyline. I could copy and paste but that would be a real hassle if it is a long storyline. Or, say I would like to use the title in another project. In FCP 7, I would just save the title to a bin. How can this be done in X?
Thanks for any input.
Cheers.

September 29, 2011 at 4:27 amIn an event, call it, say, “Titles,” create a blank compound clip called, let’s say, “Titles ‘Bin'”. In your project create titles. Copy them. Double click on the empty compound clip “Titles ‘Bin'” and lay down some GAP and paste the title over the gap clip. Keep adding (copying and pasting) all sorts of titles and title templates you are happy with to the “Titles Bin” compound clip, placing them over a gap clip.
You can give your titles descriptive names, then in the Timeline Index you can filter out everything but “titles”, and you can find and select the title you need and copy it back into a project.
You can create different compound clips in the “Titles” event earmarked for different style titles.
Voila: you now have a titles bin in a “Titles” event that you can bring to any project and has all your favorite titles with your favorite settings.
Done.
(There is one puzzling thing, and I think it’s a bug: when copying/pasting a title, the font or weight seems to get slightly messed up, but it’s easy to fix. Effects applied to the titles stay with the titles, however.)

September 29, 2011 at 10:28 amA different way that will work (but isn’t a copy and paste…) is to right click on a title you like as a starting point, adjust it in motion (things like fonts) and save it as a future title that will now appear in the titles area.
This is about the closest you can get in FCPX to a ‘favorite’

September 29, 2011 at 8:10 pmThanks for the info. Saving titles in Motion seems to work fine. I will experiment more. I do miss “round Tripping” though.
Best.

January 28, 2012 at 1:10 pmMany thanks for this working hint.
However: It’s a little bit tricky. Right click and “save to favorites” on a finished title would have been much easier and more Apple like. Unfortunately Apple is currently destroying the ease of use of their software. I still can’t believe it, that chapter markers are missing in FCPX. Also Compressor 4 can not add chapter markers if you export to a H.264 MOV. You must export to a H.264 M4V format, that – manually set in compressor – chapter markers are added to your output. That’s really worst… 🙁

November 30, 2015 at 11:51 pmHey I was having the same problem and accidentally discovered the easy solution. Make your title, and when you’re done, just right click it and hit “reveal in browser”. Boom, your title will be saved as a clip in your browser, and now you can drag it down into your timeline any time you want over other clips. Simply rename it or make an event called favourites, or favourite titles. I hope this works for everyone.
