  • Saving error – “File Error: Unknown File”

Posted by Emilio Martinez on May 5, 2008 at 5:06 pm

I could use some help troubleshooting. Lately, when I save a project file, I will get an error message that says “File Error: Unknown File” as though the original project file (or external drive) were no longer available. The only way I can save the file is to do a Save As copy to my Desktop.

What is so odd is that it happens quite randomly, and I am able to open and otherwise access files from the external hard drive (LaCie Big Disk Extreme via FW 800).

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hey there

glad someone is out there having the same problem as I am 😉 not alone anymore…

I have this problem ALL the time.

I haven’t manage to pin point in particular what is the cause because I edit with 3 other mac, across a Cat-6 intranet and accessing multiple files in the eSata on each mac…In short…it’s a mess.

when one of the mac shuts down or crashes, this happens. I can’t save the project, files goes offline, and sometimes, all the Mac crashes at the same time because we link the files all across like a chain.

what my advice is not to panic, and try to “Save Copy As” the copy locally in your Documents / Desktop…keep trying until it saves or if it doesn’t work by the 10th time…

    find your autosave projects.

BUT remember always to re-save a new version once you open the autosave file.

i can have project_v1A.fcp till project_v1Y.fcp if it requires..

    hope it helps…and good luck.

    mr H
