I am missing a few of my more expensive application install disks, yet i want to move these applications to a new computer. Is it possible for me to copy my various applications to dvd and save them that way? thank you.

No. You must have the installation discs to install the applications. They will not run by copying.

    All the best,

Generally, free programs from the internet (like MPEG Streamclip or Google Earth) CAN be copied in this way. They’re made to be small and stand-alone since that’s the best way to transfer them over the internet.

So this would work with some of those programs. Heck, you could even run some of them right off the DVD! But the larger ones like Final Cut Pro and Photoshop tend to install other files on the system that they use later. So Photoshop might run for a bit after doing this, but you’d eventually run into problems.

Just wanted to clarify because it’s likely you’ve heard of someone else doing this before. That’s the difference, though. Small apps designed to be transported vs. large apps that aren’t.

The first time you start up your new Mac, it will ask you if you want to transfer stuff from your old Mac. If you say yes, it will prompt you to connect the two with a FW cable, & start up the old Mac in “target” mode. It can then transfer all of your old apps to the new Mac. Along with your bookmarks, email, etc.
