Saving a title as an asset for later use
Posted by Norman Lang on July 1, 2011 at 10:05 pmI can’t figure out how to save a title for use in other projects. In the old days (last week), I would just save it and later select it from my project panel. As with most things in FCPX, it is probably possible, I just can’t find it in the help documents.

July 2, 2011 at 1:02 amYes I agree in the fcp ways of old you could design some text etc and then
drag a copy into your bin for using at a later date. Same thing applied to all text, filters, generators etc.Untill / IF apple reinstate something as simple there is a different workflow you can use if you happen to have the new Motion 5.
1. Find a title element in the effect browser to use as a starting point ( eg custom text)
2. control click / or right click and select open copy in motion
3. create your work of art in motion
4. when finished choose “save as”
5. give it a title and create a new category (eg my custom titles)
6. this now instantly appears back in the fcp x title browser under the catergory you created.
This looks a bit long winded when written down, but it does the job.
But, yes it would be preferable to do this directly in final cut.
Hope that helps,
cheers,
Brendan

July 2, 2011 at 2:56 amThanks Brendan, but I don’t have Motion 5. I have always used Adobe AE for animation etc. Most titles I would do in FCP or Premiere directly. I would be happy to find an easier way to do it. If not, maybe the next release will have it. I would love to know if anyone has found a solution.

FCP X actually uses the Motion engine as its tilting engine. All the built-in titles (and most built in effects, generators and transitions as well) are actually Motion documents that just expose some parameters you can change in FCP. So it makes sense that you need Motion to create new title presets, and I suspect this won’t change in future versions.

July 3, 2011 at 3:54 pmThanks Chris. My work around is to create a project named “Logo” for example, with a title that includes my logo. Then, when I need it, I open the project and copy it. Then I open the project where I need that title and paste it above the storyline. Not “butter smooth”, but it works.

I don’t think the investment of 50$ is an issue.
With Motion 5 you get the “butter smooth” solution – just with one click, following the steps explained above.Andreas

July 4, 2011 at 8:06 pmAgreed, although it does irk me a bit that Apple touted FCPX as a $300 piece of software, when you need to plop down another $100 for motion and compressor to make it fully functional (relatively speaking). They could at least have bundled compressor with it. Motion for $50 does seem like a steal, on the other hand.
