I’m using FCP 5 and whenever I save my projects it just saves them as reference files, so that if I then alter or move any of the media outside of FCP, my FCP movie becomes a sea of red “media Offline” notices. How can I save the fcp project as a self contained project? I don’t want to save a Quicktime self contained project because I’ll be wanting to come back and work on the movies in final cut?

    Thanks

Seeing this is your first post, I will give you the answer. There is a check box where you select make self-contained movie. it’s that simple.

For more basic questions like yours, you have two options, first, and always the best solution, is to look in your manual. Believe it or not, this is the quickest way to find your answer. The second is to post in the FCP Basics Forum.

Sorry, I should have put it in the basics. I did check my manual however. My problem is I can’t find that box! It’s blatently obvious when I try to export a quicktime movie (as per manual) but when I want to save the the fcp project I go to “File” choose ” ave projects as” and then the only options are naming the file and choosing its location. there is no box saying whether to make it self contained. There is a a pull down section labelled “Format” but it’s in light writing and I can’t access it. I have checked my preferences and settings and can’t see anything there. Any advice?

    Thanks

I don’t think you understand the difference between a QuickTime Movie and a project. When you save a project you’re saving an instruction set. When you’re exporting a movie you’re creating a complete video file. One is an export function, the other is a save function. You should probably read the manual or a good book about FCP to learn these fundamental dfferences.

    All the best,
