Hi–
I have a real problem. Back in 2001, I had transcribed all my father’s old radio shows. I thought they were fine, but I had forgotten that the hard drive they had been on had died, and was sent for recovery. All other files from that drive operated properly, or at least functioned after correcting their file type and creator (this is Mac). But after trying several file types, nothing has so far worked.
Has anyone worked with recovering audio files?

If it is uncompressed sound, it probably is salvageble.
(if there is data)
You can use a HEX editor to create a new file header, but Audacity might be able to do it for you, if you tell it to read raw input.
If the sound is compressed, i have no idea.Bouke

Well Audacity looked really good, but all I got out of the finished export was static.

What format is the source file?
(if a few bytes are missing, it might mess things up. That should be fixable though…)Bouke

Bouke, you’ll never believe it. I went back to the recovery drive the techs had sent back, and I had forgotten that I had complained about all the unix executable files, and they re-did the whole recovery at the time. I had mistakenly saved the first recovery to my HD, and the drive they sent had all the data it, in perfect condition 🙂
But I can’t thank you enough for your help 🙂
