save as, import, export, open location “memory”
I tried searching, but really couldn’t find anything on this particular issue. An issue that is kinda driving me crazy, and is so simple ( as far as i can tell) that i can’t believe that there isn’t a software or script-like solution.
I’m working on a project that is a 1/2 hour show comprised of multiple documentary segments. Different editors work on diff segments. We have FCP server an xsan an IT dept, etc etc. No issues there.
It’s simple: I’m constantly opening up different projects, importing stills, music, archival, exporting screeners etc and so forth. all day. media comes to me from APs all day it goes to me then is loaded to server during check-in at the end each day. So during workday it’s all local. All I want to know is this:
For example: I export ALL of my edits for approval to a “screeners” folder. That’s it. never anywhere else. But export will auto push me to the last ‘save as folder’ or whatever the last in/out action i did. But why would the program assume that i would save projects to where i put exports? that fact that the “memory” is the same or is shared, doesn’t make sense to me. Basically i don’t know what the advantage is to having ANY in/out memory tied together.
Why is the import/export/save as all tied together on the same sorta “program memory”? I have a detailed yet simple folder structure. everything is in a self made FCP DOCS. Each thing has it’s own folder like: ARCHIVAL or STILLS or MUSIC or PROJECT FILES etc, but i’m constantly sifting through folders over and over again.
Again, when would i EVER “save as” to where my media comes from? Why can’t save as have it’s own memory? Same as import same as export.
So here we are with the question: Is there anything out there, a setting, as script, software that will “force” FCP to “remember” where EACH individual action was last done in terms of SAVE or IMPORT or EXPORT? I know this seems so trivial, but honestly, i spend more time than you’d think during crunch and last minute changes navigating. It’s this moment, during the rush when you NEED to stay the course in organization the MOST and it’s where I’ll take the fast sloppy way out and just do desktop in/out dumping.
I mean doesn’t this sound like EXACTLY what we invented computers to do…and what they naturally do so well?
thanks
