    Hi Guys

i posted this in the FCP forum with little joy i was wondering if anyone has had experiance with either of these sata arrays

i run a G5 Quad with AJA KONA LHE. i need some additional storage and i am looking at the sonnet Tempo SATA E4P with the fusion 500 enclosure. but i’ve also heard about the High Point Rocket 2322 card.

now i want speed and expandability with some form of redundancy. (probably raid 5) although raid zero is tempting for the speed

the reason for my need for speed is the fact i may be capturing HD cam in the near future (the codec i capture is a question for another time)

i would like to hear from anyone who has had any experience with either of these cards and if one is better than the other. i think the rocket card has a hardware raid controller? and the sonnet is software controlled also i wonder if the size of the drives in the enclosure makes a difference. ideally i would initially want to purchase one of the sata cards with an enclosure containing 500gb drives – as many as possible – the fusion 500p contains 5 drives and the one for the rocket contains 4. is this ideal or should i buy two enclosures and fill them with 250gb drives.

i know that the more drives i have the faster the raid but i figure that if i can buy one enclosure with 500gb drives for now i can buy a second enclosure with 500gb drives later. (as the HD stuff isn’t imminent)

money is always an issue but i’d rather pay more for somthing that will work and be expandable later than be stuck with something that becomes redundant.

forgive me if this makes no sense.

    and thanks

    Nick

stop asking questions, and just trust me. Get the Sonnet E4P and the Fusion 500 and 5 Hitachi 500 Gig SATA drives. This will give you 2.5 TB, and you can expand to 10 TB on this one card. You won’t have drive failures – trust me. This is an incredible package, at an incredible price. This is what you want.

We’re running a 1TB LaCie S2S here with 5 250GB drives, though you can buy it with larger drives. Been running since January cutting 8bit SD all day, every day without a hiccup. It’s the first SATA array we’ve tested in our shop and it’s definitely working very well. We’re running in Raid 0+1. No idea how it compares to what you’re looking at, but wanted to let you know about that option.

We’re also waiting for the new G-Speed Fibre Channel array to start shipping so we can test that as well. Major redundancy at a great price if it works in the “real world” like it did at NAB.

    Thanks Walter and rob

this may sound ignorant (and probably is) but can i do single link HD edit/online with the sata drives. i looked at a review on AMUG and they say the write speed for the tempo with the port multiplier is 200mbps ish and the read is 233mbps which sounds slow. however if you have two enclosures it will go up in speed. therefor i could potentualy by 3 enclosures with two drives in each adn get 300mbps. am i correct in my thinking?

You can do DVDPro HD easily though uncompressed HD you just won’t know until you try. Speeds say you should able to, but you need to actually try it to find out.

We have a couple of incarnations of SATA raids running over here. In the HD finishing suite, we have the highpoint card connected to two four drive enclosures from promax. This has been a very flexible system for us as the enclosures have removable bays. Several other rooms have either the two enclosures or singles. We can simply move bays around the facility as needed HD, and SD. This is by far one of the most reliable and efficient storage systems we have.

Even in the rooms attached to the XSAN, we love having these drives as solid stand-alone performers. With the 2 enclosures and the highpoint card we reliably get data write speeds in the 350mb/s range.

    Good luck,

i take it that your running the highpoint card on a mac. is it the High Point Rocket 2322 card
do you find the hardware raid controller useful or do you run them at raid 0 ?

    Thanks again
