Sata or Firewire
Posted by L Isha on September 26, 2005 at 9:29 pmHello to all,
I am putting together a new G5 system this week. Sata or Firewire RAID, any brand you have had a wonderful experience with? I am working with DVCPro-50, DVcam and minidv using a Blackmagic Decklink Extreme card.
Thanks so much,

September 26, 2005 at 9:33 pmA G-RAID firewire 800 drive is a great choice. you can use it for DVCAM, DVCPRO 50, DVCPRO 100, Uncompressed 8-bit…and sometimes uncompressed 10-bit.
A SATA Raid is also a great choice. the thing I like about the G-Raids is that, if my machine goes down for any reason, I just take the drives to another machine and continue to edit. No removing a card, asking permission to install the card (needed for external SATA) in the new computer, installing software…etc.
BUT…it depends on your needs. Both are great, but the External SATA will get you better performance.

September 26, 2005 at 11:44 pmI agree. FW is more portable (and a bit cheaper) SATA is more robust and seems more stable.

September 27, 2005 at 3:05 amSounds like I’ve been leaning in the right direction… SATA. 🙂 I do not need portable–at this time–and I will probably start working with beta/digi-beta in 2006.
Thanks guys!

This might help you (there is quite a bit of other FW and SATA info on this site:

CONCLUSIONS AND COMMENTS
After two years, the G5’s FireWire 800 write speed deficiency is still there. That, along with seeming ambivalence by Apple to fully promoting the advance of FireWire technology, has had the effect of elevating Serial ATA over FireWire as the external storage technology of choice — especially since hot-swap and bootability has been added to SATA host adapters. The speed of a single FireWire 800 drive isn’t that different from a single SATA drive unit, but once you start striping two or more drives to form a RAID 0 set, the Serial ATA drives begin to pull away. Whether you choose a dual or quad drive RAID 0 enclosure, you’ll get more speed if you go with Serial ATA instead of FireWire 800.
Best Wishes,
Mitch
