SAS recommendation for three workstations?

September 13, 2012 at 2:17 pmI’m looking for a real world as in “someone is already using this solution” recommendation for a shared media RAID to use between three workstations running Final Cut. At least an 8TB capacity would be required. Bigger would be preferred-16Tb to 24Tb. Fairly standard editing is all that it would need to support. We don’t need to be able to do multiple streams of HD. Fairly easy stuff. Gigabit Ethernet would be good since the workstations are in three different rooms. Fiber would be OK but I would need cards for the machines. Of course, we don’t have an unlimited budget for this so a “cost effective” solution would be great.
Anyone running a smaller SAS set up that could recommend a solution?

September 13, 2012 at 5:42 pmWalter Biscardi runs Ethernet solutions from Small Tree Communications. Those are cheaper than the XSAN solutions that I have experience with. But with any shared media storage solution that requires more than 2 machines will need to have a server computer, the RAID itself … and yes, it will need to be fast to play back multiple streams of HD, as several machines will be doing playback at once… and then an Ethernet switch.
Contact Small Tree Communications. Tell them the Creative Cow referred you.
