Sanken COS-11D Lav Issues
Posted by David C jones on June 11, 2019 at 7:07 pmGreetings, I just purchased the COS-11D (Sennheiser connector) to use with my Sennheiser SK100 (Gen.3). The existing ME-2 sounds great, but when I switch to the 11D I get some sort of system or interference noise. I’ve tried two different 11D’s and get the same noise. It’s the first time I’ve used a different mic with the Sennheiser 100 Series. I feel like I’m missing something obvious! Any guidance would be great!

That’s not much to go on. Can you post a sample? Or at least make an attempt to describe what you hear? And how/where are you mounting the mic? This, mounting, is often where the problems come from. The COS-11D is an excellent mic that hears everything, and that can be a problem. For example, clothing rustle can sound like EMF interference at times. If you don’t mount the mic with a proper strain relief loop the handling noise (cable microphonics) can sound like HVAC rumble at times.
Better mics make us raise the level of our games. I’m just sayin’.
[EDIT]
It’s highly unlikely that the COS-11D and the Sennheiser kit mic have the same sensitivity. So make sure you preform proper gain staging by setting your transmitter’s mic gain to match the mic if you haven’t already. And of course set the receiver to handle the signal coming in from the transmitter.

June 11, 2019 at 8:13 pmHello David,
Does the noise go away or is it there all the time? There is probably a pin out issue that can be solved with the right connector wiring. Sanken has good support via Plus 24.

June 11, 2019 at 8:23 pmI just got done chatting with tech support from where I bought it, and it seems Sanken may have sent them a bad batch. The issue, as I had suspected is with the shielding; all I did was unplug the ME2 and plug in the 11D and got the interference noise.

June 13, 2019 at 12:16 pmThe COS 11D has a very hot out put. Try adjusting the TX gain to about -18. That could help a lot. and adjust the RX output to about the same. All connected to a mic level input not LINE.

June 13, 2019 at 6:02 pmIt seems to be an issue with the connector on the mic. When I insert it into the transmitter most of the way, it sounds good. When I push it all he way in, I get the noise that’s generated from the transmitter (compared to the ME2 mic). It’s almost like the 1/8 connector on the 11D is too long. Weird.
