Sanity check on Thunderbolt3 DAS
Looking for a sanity check on some of the new TB3 RAID boxes.
I work for a small post company that does lots of film capture and restoration along with other things. The standard need for lots of big, fast storage, but not a lot of demand for simultaneous access.
We have recently installed some new equipment that has increased our storage needs (surprise!) and are looking for an upgrade. Historically we have gone in for various industry specific storage solutions because yes, you get what you pay for and generic solutions simply have not been able to deliver the throughput or reliability that we have looked for.
Now, there’s the new TB3 boxes like lacie’s 6big. 1200 MB/s write speed with redundancy! They look like exactly what we need but I’m feeling wary because solutions not designed for video in-out have historically not been reliable. On the other hand, I remember when rendering video in real-time on commodity hardware, or using two displays at the same time without expensive dedicated cards were both laughable ideas. Is this simply another case of the generic hardware finally catching up to what we have spent years using speciality hardware to accomplish?
So assuming we are looking for big throughput capture and play out with limited sharing needs is there anything that more industry specific solutions will do for us that these won’t? Just looking for a sanity check.
