    I’m using FCS 2/FCP 6.0.6.
I’ve got a job coming up that involves collaborating with another editor who’s using FCP 4. While I think I’m safe working on his part of the project, what areas do I need to guard so he can work with my part of the project? Or is it not an issue?

    Any help appreciated.
    Nigel

This is a problem. You can open his project; he can’t open yours. You need to export from FCP using XML version 1. I think that was the first version that supported XML. You should test it. If he can’t he’ll have to upgrade. His software is something like six and half years old.

    All the best,

    Nigel,

There may be others who might disagree, but I say you’re heading into a less than ideal situation that frankly is probably going to be a royal pain in the ass.

It sounds as if you are already aware that you’ll be able to read his project files, but the reverse is not true, he will not be able to read yours, so you will have to create EDLs or XMLs when going in his direction. However, you’re also going to be up against significantly different versions of Quicktime as well, and because of that you’re going undoubtedly encounter the oddities and inconsistencies that will show up as timelines that never quite match, and that will make a true collaboration that requires handing things back and forth a real pain.

It’s hard enough to make great projects under ideal circumstances let alone circumstances you know are going to be problematic.

Thankyou Gentlemen, I think he now has the excuse he needs to upgrade. (Though I can see him leaping to FCP 7 and then I have to play catch-up. Can open, worms everywhere.)
In the meantime we’ll look at changing the way we do this.
