  • same material digitized three different times and getting three different timecodes

I ingested a DV clip via firewire and noticed that it was dropping frames upon playback even though I didn’t receive an error message while digitizing. I decided to redigitize the same material and noticed it was still dropping frames but in different places. I redigtized the same material a third time and still seeing dropped frames when playing the clip back. I then noticed that the timecode was different on each clip at the exact same frame even though it’s the exact same material. One clip’s timecode is off by almost five seconds when looking at the exact same frame on the three different clips.

I was always under the impression that the TC info was imbedded with the 1s and 0s on the digital tape. How can it be different at the same frame three different times?

What kind of deck and capture card? If using firewire, are you firewire drives on a separate bus than the firewire deck?

Try a different tape as a test. If everything works normally, then you have a recording with bad timecode.

I’ve seen this happen with “recycled” DV tapes. Is it a new tape?
