    HI,

I recently took over a position at a posthouse. Now I would like to up grade the suite. I am thinking of going with a Kona Card and and AJA IO.
We do commercials, corporate and stuff like that. We also deliver D-beta, SP, and DVD and will shortly be dealing in HD. I get most of my footage off D-beta or SP and P2,widescreen and SD. We are running FCP 5.1 on a G5 with a Blackmagic Card and something called ProMedia Converter. Every time I need to Capture footage I have crawl under the desk and switch BNC cables into the card depending on which deck I use and can’t actually monitor audio going in or out to the decks. Not really sure how the previous editor worked like that but I can’t. Now with the new card and IO will this solve the problem of switching inputs to the card and will I actually get to monitor audio? How can I get my boss on board? He is very opened mind and wants to make sure that I work as efficiently as possible and with the current set up it’s not possible.
    Any suggestions?

    George

A Kona LHor LHe (depending on your Mac) should satisfy your needs in most cases. You’ll be able to handle analog SD as well as SDI in both SD & HD. Check it out here:

AJA makes great cards! But the really big selling point it their support. They are top notch. If things are working out for you, or you need help figuring out your settings, call them. That’s a lot better than leaving a message for Blackmagic in Australlia.

Decklink cards have there place in this world (I own several) but if you want real support, get the AJA.

It also sound like you could use a small patch bay. I can’t imagine what my life would be like with out ours. It is an investment, but it can save hours and even days in the long run.

The Pro media is very similar to the Aja IO. I’m assuming you’re monitoring your BM card. You could use the Pro media as a converter to feed analog sources to the BM card which I’m am assuming is SDI only and could also be capable of HD depending the model.

It sounds like you might need to get someone with some engineering skills to evaluate your system because you might have every thing you need right now, just hooked up poorly.

Of course, you can’t go wrong with Aja products, but if they are not installed properly you’ll have the same issues you have now.

    > Not really sure how the previous editor worked like that but I can’t.< This is not a good foundation to create an argument for a capital investment. If your boss has no idea how the edit bay functions, your case is lost before it starts. Nothing you can say or do will make any difference. If you want your new company to invest in new hardware to suit your desires, your case is made by figuring out how their cost is going to be recovered, not how it keeps you off your hands and knees. I don't know anything about your operation or the personalities involved but if you're new in the organization, you need play by their rules. Your rules don't matter yet and you can get a reputation as s nob or a jerk quickly by insisting "this is no way to run a suite," especially if they've been doing just fine for many years.
