write on in AE is ok. Animated masks always work fine.
My favorite was the stroke recorder in Aura.

use vector paint….set up “shift paint records” to realtime….trace your font, at the speed you are comfortable, then change vector paint to animate strokes and change playback speed. I like to set vector paint to paint on transparent, then I use the original font layer as a track matte to the vector paint layer.
