  • Running more than one After Effects instance…

Posted by Nate Biehl on August 7, 2008 at 7:54 pm

A couple of years ago someone posted a method for running more than one instance of After Effects on one machine. This little trick meant I could have 2 After Effects projects open at the same time, and I could be editing one as another was rendering (as long as the renders weren’t burly enough to hog all of the memory.)

Anyone remember how to make that happen? If I remember correctly it involved a small change in the preferences file and a shortcut copy on the desktop. I was using 6.5 pro at the time. Does it work with newer versions? (just got CS3.)

    Thanks.

I don’t think it would work but you could use the BG Renderer script.

Personally, my projects always hog the CPU and memory so I don’t do much bg rendering.

I found the answer I was looking for.

Amit Zinman, thanks for the response. I know what you mean about recent work being memory intensive.

My employer just upgraded my system. My old box was so prone to disastrous crashes during long renders that I made pre-rendering a major part of my best practices. A quick render at the end became a point of pride for me, almost like clean code is for a good web designer.

The new box is relatively stable. I find myself easily previewing my way through big projects with a longer render at the end. This is good for my flexibility, but it is not the reviewing situation my employer is accustomed to. Looking for a happy medium.
