  • Run CS3 and CS4 on the same machine?

Posted by Derrick on May 14, 2009 at 9:19 am

    Hi there,

I was wondering with how much success anyone was running CS3 and CS4 creative suite on the same machine,

I have a few plug ins that aren’t compatible with CS4 yet, (AE and PP). But there are a few things CS4 is really better at.

So I still want to do the project on CS3, but eg. tracking with mocha in CS4.

anyone installed both on Windows? anything I need to be carefull of?

    thanks!

    Works fine for me!

BUT, if some of the plugins don’t work in CS4, you CAN’T open the project correctly and use CS4’s tracking. It’s one or the other. Not both!

And you probably can’t open CS4 project in CS3.

Also you need to install your plugins (the ones that DO work) in the CS4 folder.

Also when opening in Windows by double clicking, it opens the one windows has set as the default. By right clicking and then “open as” you can use the version of your choise.

    Good luck

most things will work fine, but bridge might freak out and not talk to both. I believe CS4’s bridge takes over.

    Thanks I appreciate it,

I’ve installed CS4, so far so good. Now for the plugins. I’ll be sure to install them to the CS4 folder.

I guess I’m gonna render more often he he, but the CS4 suite brought so much to the table, it’s time to use it! he he.

    thanks for the information!

I currently run both on my machine so I can create CS3 compatible projects for my Pro Motion Menu Kit products, and test it for compatibility in CS4.

Everything works fine. Plugins must be installed to BOTH programs. To do this, install the plugin to one of the programs (CS4 for example), the plugin should create some files/folders in your AE plugins directory. Copy those files to your CS3 plugins directory and it will now work in both programs. I’ve successfully done this with all my Trapcode plugins.

Like the others said, CS4 projects will NOT open in CS3, however CS3 projects WILL open in CS4.

When bridge is launched, it will open the same version of bridge that the program is. For example, AE CS3 will launch Bridge CS3, and AE CS4 will launch Bridge CS4.

    thanks,

Aonther question is in CS3 if I installed Colorista to the shared folder it does not show up in PP and AE, just in the one, if I install the PP and the AE installer, after effects keep on complaining about duplicate plug ins, and shows 1 Colorista, and PP shows 2. everything works fine, and redgiant could not give me clearer install instructions. it’s probably gonna be the same for CS4?

    anyone experience something similar?

    again, thanks for the help,
    Derrick
