  • RT Possible with Photo JPEG codec at 720×486?

    Hello:

I’m working with an Io (not HD) on FCP 5.1.4, OS 10.5.3 on a 3Ghz x 8 core Intel Mac Pro.

Is it not possible to get RT filters and transitions with Photo JPEG Quicktimes at 720×486 NTSC? I can get real time functionality with 320×240 Photo JPEG Quicktimes but not with 720×486 files compressed the same way. It seems to me like working at a larger resolution shouldn’t make that much of a difference with these low data rates (I can get RT with full 10-bit UC), but who knows.

Is this a software issue with FCP 5 or a hardware issue with the Io? Is there a list of which codecs at which sizes offer RT functionality? Would upgrading to FCP 6 give me the RT functionality I want?

I have a bunch of Quicktimes of our motion graphics work compressed with the Aurora MJPEG-A codec that I used to edit our demo reels. With Aurora gone I want to convert these to something with fairly good quality but not huge files. I have a lot of stuff I’ve already compressed with Photo JPEG, and that codec seems to handle gradients better than DVCPro 50 and produces smaller files, but I’d really like RT functionality. I’ll eventually be authoring these to a DVD, so 10 bit or 8 bit uncompressed Quicktimes would probably be overkill.

    Thank you.

You basically only get RT with the codecs that have Easy Setups. You will not get RT with Photo JPEG at full frame size.

In FCP 6.x you can use ProRes as your compressed codec for both HD and SD. You will need an Intel Mac or G5 Quad to use ProRes for HD.

There is a way to change the RT enabler file to allow the use of larger than 320 X 240 photo jpeg. But there’s a gamma shift between every effect and the original clip. So it’s not a great way to work.

    Hi:

Thanks for your replies. I guess I’ll have to change my approach or upgrade to FCP 6.

Does the Pro Res codec work well graphics and gradients and such?

    Thanks.

From what I have seen, yes. Its a 10 bit codec.

hello i realize this is an old post but… i have been desperately looking for a solution to converting some old aurora uncompressed footage on an intel mac but none of the codec packages will install on my computer – i am presuming because it is an intel mac. how are you converting your video on an intel machine? thanks.

    Hi:

Don’t know if I can be of help. All my old Igniter clips were compressed with the Aurora MJPEG-A codec; we didn’t have the uncompressed option. We can still open those clips thanks to the built-in Apple MJPEG-A codec. I don’t know if there are any current codecs on the Intel Macs that will open your uncompressed clips.

Your best bet might be to track down a G5 or G4 Mac, open the clips on that and encode them to another codec like the animation codec or 10-bit uncompressed or something.

    Good luck.
