[cherlique lilienthal] “does adobe premiere pro cs6 actually need rovi totalcode? “

Premiere doens’t need TotalCode, unless you want one of the features.

Smart-rendering MPEG2 and AVC-Intra (copy frame data directly from source/render files to output files without decompression and recompression) looks pretty cool — I’ve been thinking about picking up a license for this feature.

DCP output from Premiere would be neat, too, if that’s your thing.

I don’t know what kind of performance boost to expect from GPU-accelerated H.264 encodes. I find AME to quite speedy.

[cherlique lilienthal] “and does totalcode effect the workflow of after effects?”

If you’re using AME to render Ae comps, then yes, you could exploit it; if not, then I don’t think so.

thanx walter, well I know that premiere doesn’t need totalcode to function. what I meant was, sins cs5 the support for importing and exporting has been widely upgraded. and that’s what mainconcept codec suite/rovi totalcode is for right? to add those features. cs6 looks like it already has all of those features built in so that’s why I was wondering what exactly totalcode brings to the table that adobe premiere pro doesn’t already have.

The feature-set of TotalCode expands upon what’s already in Premiere. There is some overlap, but the VC-3 (DNxHD) and some of the MXF stuff is unique. I haven’t used it, but I would think that TotalCode’s support for VC-3 MXF OP-Atom would allow you to use Avid media natively without rewrapping to QuickTime and thus eliminating the QT32 Server bottleneck.

The expanded smart rendering, additional encoding options, and DCP output are all added functionality.
