I’ve searched around for answers on this one, so I apologize if this has been covered:

I’m trying to find out if there’s a way to accomplish the following:

    1. Create SEQ in FCP
    2. Export as MULTITRACK project to STP
    3. Mix away with all sorts of busses, EFX, etc.
    4. Return to FCP to make some changes that affect timing, new material, etc.
    5. Return back to STP with previous mix still intact, but new material or changes to existing are reflected in the STP project.

Yes, I expect that I’ll need to perform some tweaking to the timing of EFX, etc., but can this be accomplished without a lot of manual labor?

Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

This is not possible. The tweaks you make in FCP will not be reproduced in the STP project. Obviously picture only tweaks won’t matter, but anything that affects audio, levels, lengths, filters, extra will have no reference in the STP project. You need to be in picture lock before you do what you’re doing.

Unfortunately, Tom is correct. However, here’s how we’re using STP.

If you bring in a SINGLE audio file to STP it will round trip back into FCP with no problem. So, we’re using STP to fix specific audio tracks (noise reduction) and then send them back to FCP. At that point, you now have replaced your “original” QT file with an STP file. You can move forward with your edit, making changes till the cows come home since your STP files are now a part of the timeline/project.

Obviously this is not as easy or elegant as dealing with a whole sequence, but it does enable us to access the tools of STP and integrate them into our workflow. Since we’re on X-SAN, we can have a dedicated audio guy “fixing” selected scenes very early in the off-line process. Once this “fixes” are done, they’re done. They move along with the rest of the audio up until picture lock. Then we export an OMF and go out to Pro tools or a Fairlight for the final mix.

I personally believe that we’ve only scratched the surface of what STP wil be capable of. Looking forward to NAB.

Thanks for your responses. I kind of figured that would be the case.

Unfortunately, you know how it goes – you’re told picture is locked and then, at the last minute, something or someone forces a change after most of the audio has been sweetened. With 30 or more tracks of audio in the mix, it’s quite an operation to go back an modify the mix by hand after a new picture cut comes down the pike.

Oh well, back to cutting and pasting!!

    Thanks again.
