Roundtrip FCP to STP
Posted by Ben Brodbeck on August 4, 2007 at 7:04 pmHi,
I’m editing a DV project and would like to normalize my audio in SoundTrack Pro. When I right-click the media to send it to an STP audio file project, the option is greyed out.
How would I go about normalizing my audio? Can I perform an audio mixdown in FCP? My levels have already been boosted to +12 and are still a touch low.
Any ideas on how to attack this one?
Thanks,
Ben Brodbeck

Thanks for the input. I meant to say, I was right-clicking on the clip in the timeline…not from my bin. Am I still possibly missing something?
Thanks!,

P.S. I enjoy your video tutorials & podcasts very much!

Are you running FCP 6? If so, head up to the FCP Menu:
Modify/Audio/Apply Normalization Gain
Also, you may want to consider a loudness maximizer as opposed to basic Peak Normalization. Final Plug 5 is an AU Plugin that works really well.

Simply decrease the Threshold setting, set a Ceiling [typically -0.1dB] and fire away. This will result in an increase in average loudness. Much more efficient. Use it sparingly though. Aggressive processing can potentially destroy the dynamic range of your segment.

I never do this from the timeline, right clicking a clip. I use the File > Send To Soundtrack Pro and send the entire timeline there. Works fine here.

August 7, 2007 at 7:46 pmIf you can’t get it to go, just export the timeline as an .aif
and boost that file in soundtrack, then put it under the original
and disable it after you line it up.sometimes you have to do things the hard way 🙂
