  • Rounding Offset strokes for shape Merge.

I am looking to do a radial grow on of a grid of roads by merging the centre lines, then using intersection to drive a radial reveal, then offset and round to get leading edge of lines and ultimately curb shapes to round. I have encountered two issues. First is testing with trim of just merged centre lines, some roads are rounding some are square even though there is only one stroke, offset and round applied to the shape merge. When I try to add the circle intersection instead of trim all the open lines try to close making it look crazy for any lines with more than 2 points and half of the blocks don’t show which might get resolved by path direction. I really want to take it one step further and vary the road sizes but that generates other issues with the rounding.

I’m really not sure about the second issue you’re having, but the trim effect and the shape strokes is a common issue. I’ve found the simplest solution is to use two layers with one set as the alpha matte for the other. This should allow you to grow / shrink the paths.

In terms of why some are rounded and straight, that feels like it might be the Line Cap options chosen, but it’s difficult to know without seeing your timeline.

The matte would draw on as open shapes. I’m really looking for the rounded streets to interest and merge. Basically closed lead edge for roads as they draw on. If find edges had more control than I would just remove the offset, grow out round end strokes and then find edges although rounding of resulting city blocks wouldn’t work.

Might just have to try something else entirely like a sweep, metaballs and toon shade in 3d.
