    Hi,

This is a cross-post from the Motion forum…

I’m trying to do a simple text round-trip from Motion 2 to FCP 5.1.2.
With text created in Motion then round-tripped to the FCP time-line.

    Both sequences are DV PAL.

When the text shows up in FCP the text is VERY pixellated, and
looks awful, especially compared to FCP’s Boris text.

    Here’s what I’m doing:

    1. The sequences in both programs match [DV PAL]
    2. Create text in Motion 3.
    3. Save
    4. Drag icon and place it onto FCP 5.1.2 timeline
    5. I then notice that the text looks low-res and pixellated, even after rendering.
    6. Fold arms in frustration!

Any ideas? What am I doing wrong?
Why does my text look bad?

    Thanks in advance.

Are you watching this on an external monitor?

DV compression does horrendous things to text.

    Yes, on external monitor.

The strange thing is, the Boris 3D text looks great, both in FCP and on the monitor, but when the Motion text is imported/roundtripped, it looks awful.

Is it just me, or is this a bug?

No that I know of. Are you sure your Motion project is setup for DV PAL and not SD PAL? Try moving your motion prject WITHIN FCP up or down a scan line (center value of 0,1 or 0,-1) and see that helps you at all. If you have moved the motion file around in the canvas, make sure that you center value in the motion tab is on an even scan line (not a value of 244.44 for example)

Don’t know what to tell ya… set up as DV PAL on both, and tried
jiggling the pixel placement, but to no avail.

Not sure what else to do here…

Going to have to give Motion a miss and hope V.3. works better for me.

Sorry, Wayne not sure what the problem is.

I have not tried a test with DV PAL.

Well, I put my money where my mouth is and did a test and all seems well.

    Text looks great.

Have you double check the field order for both FCP and motion projects/timelines?

    Jeremy,

Thank you much for taking the time to check and to try help me.

The field order for both is lower (even).

    Hurrumph!

Try turing off the field order in the motion project and leaving it on in the FCP project.

I’m doing just what you’re attempting and it’s working fine for me. Instead of dragging the icon, try exporting the file in the same format as your FCP project and then import that file (woks with Alpha channel too). That’s been my workflow and titles look great. I prefer doing it this way so that I don’t need to render the title in FCP each time I move or trip the title clip.
    Hope this helps.
