Round logos not so Round
Posted by Terry Moore on February 20, 2007 at 3:21 pmWhen I import an image file, such as a round logo, into FCP, it becomes squished horizontally. The round image looks correct in PhotoShop but oval when it gets to FCP. It looks this way on the computer monitor and the NTSC monitor I have connected.
What am I missing? Thanks in advance,

February 20, 2007 at 3:31 pmYou didn’t account for this in Photoshop? In Photoshop, you need to design at square pixels (which is 720×540 if your FCP timeline is 720×480 or 720×547 in photoshop if your FCP sequence is 720×486). Design as normal, then as they very last step, resize your image in photoshop to your timeline size, keeping the ‘constrain proportions’ box unchecked. This will account for the difference between square pixels that photoshop like to design in, and the non square pixel that is digital SD video.

February 20, 2007 at 3:45 pmAre you using the latest version of FCP? Because FCP should be smart enough to adjust for this in the aspect ratio parameter of the motion tab should you forget. If you adjust aspect ratio to -12.5%, it will turn your logo back to circular. Again, FCP will usually adjust for this if you forget to make the adjustment in Photoshop. It has always done it in my experience.

February 20, 2007 at 6:47 pmOr do something really daring and unusual, RTFM! It’s all there, the square vs rectangular pixel thing,
and all the advice about what to do.

February 20, 2007 at 11:15 pmI have to admit I’m a bit confused by that last post. Not sure what the person was talking about. Pardon my ignorance, but what does RTFM mean?
Anyway, I do have the lastest version of FCP. And the latest hardware. But I still get non-round circles. I will try JeremyG’s suggestions, unless someone has a better answer.
RTFM?

February 21, 2007 at 12:25 amYou caught me on a day that I’m just a little grumpier than usual. 🙂 But having said that, why would
you ask people to spend any time answering a question that’s right in front of you, either in the
paper manual or right there behind the Help button. You get a faster answer and you’re not wasting peoples’ time. It’s simple consideration. RTFM has been around for a long time and was created for questions exactly like yours, ones that can be answered by opening your manual.
Don’t let my rant dissuade you from posting questions to the COW, but look at your immediate resources first please.
