Roughen edges – how comes it moves?
Posted by Davidfilmdirector on October 29, 2007 at 12:52 amI put a roughen edges on a tracked layer that moves around. When I render it, it looks like water flowing behind the letters. I am not sure why it is doing this. If I turn off roughen edges, it is gone. Why doesn’t the effect stay on the edges of the text?

October 29, 2007 at 4:24 amI had this same problem, except the text was stationary and the camera moved. But the same thing happened that you are describing. An answer from someone would be appreciated.

October 29, 2007 at 2:22 pmi’ve noticed a problem that sounds similar to what you describe… it was only when continuously rasterize was on.
i was able to fix it by precomping the layer, leaving all attributes in the original comp, then applying roughen edges to the layer within the precomp (and removing it from the precomp in the main comp).

October 30, 2007 at 1:55 amThe behavior that you’re seeing is essentially because of the order of operations in rendering.
Within each raster (non-vector) layer, elements are applied in the following order: masks, effects, transformations, and layer styles. For continuously rasterized vector layers (which includes text layers), transformations occur before masks and effects.
By precomposing as you have described, you can force the effect the be rendered before the transformation.
For more information, see the “Render order and collapsing transformations” or “About nesting and precomposing” section of After Effects Help.
