Any recommendations for a good rotoscoping program? I’ve been using After Effects for most of my roto duties, but there’s gotta be something better out there.

Also, for those of you doing rotoscoping in AE, would you mind sharing your workflow? I know every shot requires different approaches/methods, but do most people use garbage mattes first then vector paint/color keys/etc. for detail? (I’m talking the bare-knuckle, no chroma backdrop style of roto here…)

    hey,
have you checked out silhouette roto? it is a plug-in for after effects that is pretty tight.

Curious gFx Pro was a killer roto and paint tool IMO but they sold out to Virtz (or something). However, Curious also licensed the technology to Adobe. Makes me think AE 7 will have some Curious things in it 🙂

    Let the rumours fly!

    Isn’t Commotion dead?

Commotion 4.1 still works perfectly in Tiger. As long as Commotion still has Roto/tracking/ and paint tools that smoke AE’s, it’s not dead in my eyes.

Those guys are right, Commotion was strong but Silhouette roto and paint are even better, and cheaper! Check em out at silhouettefx.com. As to your question about workflow, Do anything you can to the image before you start articulated roto. (i.e. garbage matting, keying) A good roto program will also have a motion tracker so you can apply tracking data to your paint strokes, splines or control points on your spline shapes. That can greatly speed up the task!
If Commotion’s web site still exists, there were some great paint and roto tutorials on there you should check out. The principals taught there can be applied to any software package (thank you Scott Squires). Hope this helps!
