    Hi everyone,

I’m working on a small 3min short and I wanted to achieve an effect of having a drawn line from off screen to follow chosen contours be it a window, the edges of a building or even a person walking by and continue off screen. The idea that the line is continuous and was always there traced around selected people and objects as they go about their lives.

Now I tried to rotoscope frame by frame in photoshop which produced results but they weren’t spectacular and moreso they weren’t accurate, the line kept on changing and was too irregular, even though I did want the line to morph and manipulate as it traced the contours of people walking by etc.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas, direction or suggestions as to how I might achieve this effect? Is there any easier way to do this without having to rotoscope frame by frame?

    Your help is supremely appreciated.
    Thankyou in advance.
    Kel

Is the video moving or a locked off shot?

If it’s locked off, just use the Pen tool to draw the complete path of the line. Then use the ‘stroke’ effect. Animate the ‘end’ or offset parameters to have the stroke animate along the path.

If it’s a moving shot, i’d still use this approach, but motion track the clip to the image.

Mask could work, probably better than paint effects.

After getting used to masks, check out this script, it might help you:

It’s not. Some values within the script are in Spanish (and tremendously unpolished), but instructions and buttons are not. My English is terrible anyway, and I am sorry for that. Further instructions in the help buttons of the script, and here:
