I’ve created two roto brush mattes from the same footage, one layer per actor. From looking at the display modes, it looks like the process is automatically creating the matte, but I can’t see it’s effect in the comp. It just appears as two un-matted layers. I’m sure I’m doing something wrong. Beneath them, I have a matte painting that is only partially revealed with a matte, then the base footage layer with the rest of the action, which matches the to roto brush layers.

With regards to the two roto brush layers not properly making everything transparent that isn’t one of the actors, what do you recommend?

I would suggest reading the instructions. It’s not the world’s most intuitive tool. Here’s a page with links to some very useful resources.
