Rotating a baseball on x or y axis
Posted by Paul Campbell on January 11, 2010 at 2:12 pmFinding a 2-D image of a baseball and making it roll on the z axis is easy enough, but I’m trying to make the ball spin on either the x or y axis for the true 3-D effect. I’ve used the CCSphere effect before to make 3-D planets, etc from fractal noise patterns, but the threads on a baseball (or the lines on a basketball) aren’t random, so trying to create a baseball that I can spin is proving tricky. Can someone help? Thanks.

January 11, 2010 at 2:51 pmi think you should try to find a spherical map of a baseball on a 3d website and then use the cc spherzize filter, or try fiddling with a square photoshop file untill you find the right way to put the lines on a square

January 11, 2010 at 3:24 pmA quick Google search turns up what you need.

January 11, 2010 at 5:28 pmHi Paul,
I would advise you to google for spherical mapping. Mainly your map should always have a 2:1 aspect ratio. To avoid the north & south pinch you need to use the Polar coordinates distortion effect when creating your map. Creating geometrically complex spherical maps is not an easy task, it takes time and patience;-)
You can visit my site and check the InvigoMany-Sport for some examples.
E-Mail me if you like the Baseball object and I will send it to you for free.
The project was meant for Invigorator but you could also use CC-Sphere if you like. Opening the texture, transparency & bump-mapping compositions will show you exactly how these maps were created right inside of After effects.Salut.

January 11, 2010 at 6:30 pmHi Henk,
The Creative Cow series “Zaxwerks-Invigorator-Training” does that in detail.
There is also a lot of info at the Zaxwerks forum on how to create many different things. Just make a search.
Salut.
