I am shooting a promotional video for a client which is supposed to be broadcast on a dedicated 16:9 vertical display.

I need to save as much time in post as possible as I will only have 2 days for complete post production hence it would be a great time saver if there was some way to rotate the footage at the same time it’s being transcoded to Prores.

Broadcast from what? 9×16 is not a format. Is this file being played off a computer onto some sort of vertical LCD monitor? Are you sure they really have some sort of 9×16 display? In any case you can still work in standard 16×9 hd pro res and output a standard qt. THEN just rotate that file 90 degrees in Qt player and save.

You do not rotate your footage, you rotate your monitor as Dave said. Video in always horizontal but if you turned your camera 90 deg. then turn your monitor 90 deg. it will be displayed correctly.

Good point, I never thought of it like that. I simply assumed that I would have to rotate the footage since it’s a vertical screen.

    Thanks for enlightening me 🙂

I have had legitimate reasons for rotating compressed video. I often work with “portrait” video that, while intended for users who rotate their screens, is often previewed on unrotated monitors. The people previewing the video may not have monitors that rotate, so I send them low-res rotated videos.

You can rotate compressed video with MPEG Streamclip on a Macintosh platform. You’ll have to zoom out and crop the left and right edges.
