  • Rookie question: moving masks and compositions

I am sure the answer is right around the corner, but I’ll ask anyway. Suppose you have a video clip of a van that is moving, and has a sign on the side, and you would like to composite a new sign on the side of the van? It seems that masking the van video from frame to frame and using keyframes to mask the original sign would work OK, but what is the easy/right way to get the new sign to “move” in sync with the van video? Once again, imagine video of a van going down the road, from left to right in your perspective. As such you can’t (I think, hopefully I am wrong) use a static image inside the mask, since both the location and perspective of the original sign changes from frame to frame, and therefore, the new composited sign would have to shift and change as well.

The “easy” way is to use motion tracking which unfortunately isn’t a part of Vegas.
You need a package such as Boris FX which, at $300, is probably the cheapest way to get into doing this.
